Malaysia’s Taxi Horror Stories #2

Audrey’s friend who is Malaysian came back from Singapore to visit. She stayed in Bukit Bintang area and they decided to meet up in PJ one evening. She knew the etiquette of Bukit Bintang taxis and insist on finding a taxi that uses meter.

The first taxi she approached offered RM25 to send her to PJ. She kindly turn it down and approached another taxi. The next taxi said RM40. She walked away again and lucky for her, the third taxi agreed to use meter.

Upon arriving destination, she was shocked that the meter showed RM50. She didn’t know that she was in a premium taxi. Should’ve paid RM25 yeah?

Hacking Malaysia’s Personal Income Tax

Everyone must be scrambling to file their taxes in Malaysia for 2012 before the deadline of April 30th. But before you rush to it, here are a few hacks for your Malaysia tax.

1. Apple iPad is entitled to LHDN personal income tax relief but not Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Any tablet that includes a cellular phone feature that allows you to make a telephone call or text using telco services is consider a phone and not a tablet therefore you cannot claim. Please take note that my tablet suggestions are not limited to Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab.

2. Any broadband subscription including telco broadband service is claimable up to RM500 per year.
Broadband meaning your Streamyx, Unifi, Celcom, Digi, Maxis and also all smartphone broadband plans. This does not include your dial up 1515 or 1511.

3. E-books are consider books too.
Maximum claims of RM500 per year.

4. RM300 for short lifespan sports equipment.
This INCLUDES shuttle cocks, tennis balls, ping pong balls but EXCLUDE sport shoes, bicycle, swim wear and bla bla bla. (WTF RIGHT?)

5. Keep your receipts for 7 years.
Some receipts do fade away after a certain amount of time. My suggest would be take a picture of them and store them online – google drive, skydrive, dropbox, etc

Further inquires, please call to LHDN at 1300-88-3010 or email to callcentre@hasil.gov.my.

Malaysia’s Taxi Horror Stories #1

My dear friend Miss T from Indonesia was back in KL for her convocation. She and her mum and younger sister arrived 1 day earlier and stayed at one of the hotels at Bukit Bintang. The father arrived one day later and opted to stay in Pudu so the ladies would need to go meet him at the new hotel. This means they need a taxi ride from Bukit Bintang to Pudu.

If you’re unfamiliar with Bukit Bintang of KL. It’s the heart of the golden triangle where everyone gathers to eat, shop, loiter or just about anything in KL. They spent a good 30 minutes trying to get a taxi that uses meter to Pudu but in vain. Taxi drivers who notice that they do have luggage even asked for RM50 just to drive them to Pudu from Bukit Bintang. It’s literally walking distance if you minus the inconvenience of a child and luggage.

Refuse to give in to any of the absurd charges the taxi drivers wanted, her mum decided to walk all the way down the street and get a taxi from there. Finally her mum got a taxi that agrees to use meter. That means stopping in front of the hotel of Bukit Bintang before going to Pudu. The taxi driver was absolutely fine till the moment he realized that he has stopped in front of a hotel and there were luggage. He got so furious and came out of the car mumbling in distress.

Miss T immediately signal that there’s a heavy big luggage that needs to be help to put into the trunk. Taxi driver saw but refused to help and continue mumbling louder. Her mum even tripped down while trying to rush towards her to help carry the luggage. Moments later in the taxi. Miss T expressed how upset she was and why couldn’t he helped. He shouted in Malay and my friend couldn’t make up what it was. He then decided to turn the volume of the radio to the max for the whole entire trip. Lucky for my friend, the trip was short.

Upon hearing this story, it’s a tremendous dismay of how much services in general suck in Malaysia. We have absolutely zero courtesy when it comes to serving others. Even if my friend were to call or write in to complain about this matter to the Taxi Service authorities. You and I know that they will most probably ignore this matter and the taxi drivers will continue their hooligan attitude.

Tricky EPF rules to cheat your hard earned money.

Employees should take extra care of this particular rule EPF has. It’s just outright broad daylight robbery.

The EPF Rule
If ONE (1) of your Nominees in the EPF Nominees list dies, automatically the whole arrangement (EPF Nominees list) is VOID. Meaning if, you only put in One (1) name & unfortunately he/she dies before you? Automatically EPF will channel your EPF money to trustee of AMANAH RAYA upon your death.

Even though if you have few names in the EPF Nominees list, – the whole arrangement is VOID & none of the individual names left in the EPF Nominees list will get their portion & automatically EPF will channel your EPF money to trustee of AMANAH RAYA upon your death.

Piece of advice – if any of the your Nominees in the EPF Nominees list dies, please do immediately approach the nearest EPF counter & present the Death Certificate of the individual & register your NEW / LATEST Nominee in the EPF Nominees list + NEW / LATEST percentage.

If, you & the other party (maybe spouse) involved in the same misfortune (accident / illness) that caused death to both yourself / spouse please, please, please alert your siblings / relatives / parents to immediately approach the nearest EPF counter & share the information within 3 days to AVOID all EPF money to be surrendered to trustee of AMANAH RAYA.

Upon surrender to trustee of AMANAH RAYA, your children will have to battle the money thru 3 channels;

  • Majlis Agama
  • Pejabat Tanah
  • Mahkamah

EPF’s Response
If a member has more than one nominee and one of the nominees dies during the member’s lifetime, only the portion that was bequeathed to the deceased nominee will be invalid.

Should the member later dies without updating his nomination, the other nominees will receive their portion accordingly. Only the portion that was bequeathed to the deceased nominee will be subject to procedures under ‘EPF savings without nomination’ in which the first priority for the right to claim the member’s savings goes to the nearest next of kin or the appointed administrator of the deceased
member’s estate.

Therefore it is not true that if you, as a member, have named more than one nominee, the entire nomination will be void if one of the nominee dies before you. It follows however that if you have named only one nominee and he or she dies before you, the nomination will be void unless a new beneficiary is nominated.

Please note that you don’t have to produce the death certificate of a deceased nominee to change your nomination. You can change/update your nomination anytime by simply completing a new KWSP 4 (AHL) Form. This will automatically revoke any earlier nomination made.

The information concerning approaching EPF counter within 3 days to avoid EPF savings being ‘surrendered to Amanah Raya’ if no nomination is made or if nominee dies at the same time as the member is not true.

Depending on the amount of savings in the member’s account, if there is no nomination the procedure will be as follows
If member’s EPF savings are less than RM25, 000:

Initial sum of RM2, 500 will be paid to the next of kin.
The balance will be paid after a two-month period from the date of the member’s death.

If member’s EPF savings are more than RM25, 000:

Initially a sum of RM2, 500 will be paid to the next of kin.
The second payment (not more than RM17, 500) will be paid to the next of kin after two months from the date of the member’s death.

The balance of the savings will be paid upon submitting the Letter of Administration/Letter of Probate/Distribution Order/Faraid Certificate from the party that administers estates such as Amanah Raya Berhad or the Court or the Land Office, respectively. The process to obtain these documents is time-consuming and certain fees will also need to be paid. On the other hand, with nomination, no fees need to be paid.

This is precisely why nominating is very important. You should also ensure that you update your beneficiary whenever there are any major life changes such as marriage, additional new members or the death of a nominated beneficiary.

I fear for the future of our nation in Malaysia

This picture above is from a text book in Malaysia. As to why are the kids in Malaysia being asked this question is beyond my comprehension. Below is the question in Malay and translation in English.

Text in Malay
Sekiranya anda seorang pemimpin, nyatakan dua langkah yang boleh anda lakukan untuk mempertahankan status quo orang Melayu.

Text translated in English
If you’re a leader, please state 2 ways you could retain the status quo for Malays.

After reading it, I really fear for the future of our nation in Malaysia. This country will surely perish itself with kids being thought this way. The basic fundamental of building a country starts from the very roots which are our future generations. We need to provide tip top education in order to build great brilliant leaders with integrity and a compassion heart. This tip top education also requires dedicated teachers which to tell the truth, Malaysia is highly lack of.

I’m truly disappointed that even after 50 years, the people who are running the country are still busy pocketing as much resources from the country as they can. Why can’t anyone try to build the country and raise our living standards? Malaysia is a land full of potentials, if only they all could think like my friend, Chong.

Chong
Why remain status quo when there’s always the option to be better?

The Star misquoted Roshan Thiran

Newspaper in Malaysia are interesting businesses.

We’ve seen bad photoshopped pictures reporting a total different story – http://holiestmonk.blogspot.com/2011/07/malaysia-newspaper-spread-lies-about.html

Today we have Roshan Thiran being misquoted –

According to Roshan Thiran, CEO of Leaderonomics, a leadership development social enterprise, leadership styles are driven by personalities.
“And as far as public perception goes, Lim is seen as a Gen X leader whom people can relate to easily.
“He has established an image as a leader who is approachable. It’s a positive trait but on the downside, he may take a while to respond to issues. (full article here http://goo.gl/uT22j)

Roshan Thiran has clarified on his Facebook page that he is a big fan of Lim Guan Eng and view him as one of the few (if only) true leaders in the political space. He has a high regard for him and regards him as a servant leader who serves the public with dedication, and is a man of action. And if you ask any Gen X-er today who they regard as a great leader, Guan Eng usually wins tops down. All the best to Guan Eng and let it be known that you have a major supporter in Roshan Thiran and his team. (Roshan’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roshan-Thiran/54645209514)

I want to but can’t support local radio stations in Malaysia.

The Habit
It has been a long time since I’ve listen to the radio. This is mainly because I’ve got a USB port in my car. Who could resist songs that you love on demand anytime, anywhere.

The Incident
Whenever it rains heavily, I would choose to leave my office earlier or later. I picked the later and left my office at 8:30pm. Upon driving towards B1 from B3, I’m surprised that I needed to queue to get onto ground floor.

Baffled by the situation, I decided to turn on the radio in hope to catch up with traffic updates. It’s ridiculous that rain alone could cause such massive jam on the Sprint highway and LDP at such late hours.

The Radio Station
Patiently, I listened to the preset channels on my radio. Station to station, song after song I let them play out. Within minutes, I couldn’t help but notice the funny DJ scratching alike noise that is caught in between certain parts of the song. Shortly, I realized what that sound was all about. It’s trying to censor out lyrics that contains swearing, dirty thoughts, inappropriate behavior and biblical references even.

How to support?
Scratching noises is just one of the method used. Meridith Brooks has this famous song name ‘Bitch’ where they totally deleted the word in the song. Same goes to Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’ where they deleted the word ‘girl’ and recently ‘skinny dipping’ was censored from ‘Last Friday Night’. Katy Perry did mention about her song ‘I Kissed A Girl’ when she was performing in Malaysia. She thinks that by deleting the word ‘girl’ from the song just makes it even more nasty cause then you can put whatever word after ‘I kissed a _________ and I liked it…’

This whole censorship thing is extremely disgusting to my taste. What is the point of censoring or deleting certain words when you’ll get to see the whole title when you buy the CD? We would know certainly what fits in ‘I kissed a _______’.

I love my music, so much that a slight, short distortion could throw my groove away. So, I want but really couldn’t bring myself to support local radio stations. I miss Capital FM.
